If the beautiful spring weather has you aching to get out in the garden, you’re not alone. This is the prime season for gardeners, but if you’ve never had a garden before it can be a little intimidating.  Don’t let fear stop you from trying your hand at this relaxing and rewarding hobby. Read on for some great beginning gardening tips and get started enjoying nature today.

Location, Location

The location of your garden is important because it determines the amount of sun your plants will receive. Most plants in an edible garden (fruits, vegetables, and herbs) need about six hours of sun each day. If your home shades the yard most of the day, a fruit or vegetable garden won’t do well there. Before you commit to a type of garden and a location, spend a day watching how the sun moves across your space.

Plan For Water

Plan your garden close to a water source. There is nothing worse than having to lug buckets of water to your garden in the middle of the heat of summer when all you really want to do is put out a sprinkler and maybe run through it a few times. If you plan your garden close enough for a hose to reach, you will always have a good source of water when your plants are thirsty.

Good Dirt

Most gardens need soil that is nutrient rich and has good drainage. You can ensure this by buying gardening soil and mixing about three inches of it into the top six or so inches of soil on the ground. If you’re planning for raised beds, you can buy raised bed soil that is designed perfectly for them. Another option you can consider is container gardening. Many plants grow well in containers, and there are special potting soil mixes available to help them thrive.

The Right Plants

The biggest thing to remember is that you need to choose plants that match your growing conditions (by planting them in the right place) and do well in your region. One way to do this is to try your hand at native plants. Native plants are those that naturally grow in your area, so you know they already do well there. If you want some outside species also, figure out your hardiness zone and consult a plant specialist to make sure the non-native plants aren’t invasive species that will overrun your native plants.
