It may be February, but spring gardening is just around the corner. Finalize your garden designs now, so you have enough time to plan and prepare. Discover five ways to make your native plants garden perfect this spring.

Perfect Paths

As you plan your spring garden, plan for roomy pathways. It’s tempting to pack as much garden as we can into our space, but it’s more important to have room to navigate comfortably. For main walkways, strive for at least 5 feet width, and 3 feet for side paths. If you have especially tall plants lining the walkways, they will feel smaller so you should make them even wider. While you’re planning the paths, choose pavers that provide some traction and won’t wobble for the best, safest walking experience.

Entertaining Areas

The garden isn’t the only thing in the yard. A big part of the joy of gardening is looking over the beauty your hard work produces, and showing it off to others. Plan for entertaining or outdoor living spaces that are comfortable, roomy, and have a good view of the garden.

Safe Steps

If your yard has a significant grade, consider incorporating steps into your design. The ascent of the steps should be gradual – your garden steps are a leisurely stroll, not an efficient climb like indoor steps. A rise (the height) of about 6 inches and a run (the depth) of 14 make a good, easy garden stair. If you’re going to have more than 10 steps, create a platform after every fourth step for rest and to break it up.

Space To Spread

Don’t pack your garden full of too many seedlings to start the season, or there won’t be enough room for them to spread out and grow. If you do want the look of a dense, full landscape right away, plan to thin out the plants as they grow. Alternatively, you could mix in some short-lived “filler” plants to temporarily fill in the space while your native plants grow and spread.

Curate Comfort

Your garden should be an oasis. Choose plants that look, feel, and small nice, or that attract the regional animals and insects that make you happy. Use tall or broad-leafed trees to provide shade and block the wind. Increase privacy with tall ornamental grasses. Your garden should be a place you feel comfortable and at peace, so plan for that.
