Environmentally conscious landscaping and gardening are becoming more common throughout the globe, for residential and commercial properties alike. Whether you’re planting natives in your yard for aesthetics or building a rain garden to reduce runoff, you are assisting your local eco-system. If you love native plants, you may have heard the term “micro prairie” buzzing around in the community. Learn more about micro prairies, and discover how to start one of your own!

Start with Native Plants

As Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “all good things are wild and free.” The micro garden solves the space issue that so many homeowners have today. You don’t have to own several acres of land to support your local wildlife! With a micro prairie, you can choose a small section of your yard or property and plant a beautiful, wild collection of natives. To build a micro garden, simply start with a thoughtful collection of native plants. American Native Plants can help you decide which ones to choose for your property.

Choose an Area

Consider a prairie of wildflowers you may come across in the wild. Not only is it filled with a variety of flowers, but it’s located in the direct sunlight! Choose a space in your yard or property that receives the most sunlight. If you don’t have many sunny areas on your property, select native plants that require minimal sunlight to thrive. Select a space and then expand it by two to three feet. Your native plants will bloom upward and outward, and you will want the extra space!

Important Considerations

Whenever you plant natives, there are several important factors to consider. Some natives grow taller than others, and you need to space these varietals away from smaller plants, so they don’t shade them out. As with any project, ensure that you remove any unwanted weeds! Keep in mind that the closer you plant your natives, weeds will have less space to flourish.
