Why is It Important to Restore Native Plants?

Since 1998, American Native Plants has provided millions of plants to landscapers and contractors throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

Since 1998, American Native Plants has provided millions of plants to landscapers and contractors throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

The urbanization of the 20th and 21st century transformed the wide open spaces of North America into cities, suburban neighborhoods, and fenced off properties. More than 150 million acres of habitat and farmland have been lost to urban sprawl, and the movement will continue as the population grows. To build and expand may be a natural tendency for humanity, but ecosystems aren’t able to function when the population becomes dominated by people. Restoring native plant habitat is just one step we can take to preserve biodiversity throughout the United States.

Discover American Native Plants

Since 1998, American Native Plants has provided millions of plants to landscapers and contractors throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond. We are committed to growing and distributing native plants that are critical to the establishment of biodiverse natural ecosystems. Our nursery features an inventory of over 400,000 native trees, native shrubs, and herbaceous native plants.

Take a Tour of the Nursery

Located in Middle River, Maryland, our nursery is open year-round to accommodate your native plant needs. Our knowledgeable staff is constantly updating and increasing our inventory to meet the demands of our customers throughout the region. The heated greenhouse spans half an acre, and we’re constantly planting new crops and species to maintain a large inventory.

A Year-Round Process

Growing and cultivating native plants is a year-round process that takes care and precision. Our staff is regularly stratifying and planting new seeds to meet customer orders or to start new contract grow sequences for larger restoration projects. We take pride in our work and are devoted to seeking the provenance of every single one of our plants. Currently, we have provenance available for over 75% of our inventory!

Native Trees, Herbaceous Native Plants, and Shrubs

American Native Plants offers a variety of native trees for you to choose from. All native trees and native shrubs are available in containers for easy transport and planting convenience. To minimize transplant shock, trees transported in containers have well-established root systems.

We stock a wide selection of trees and shrubs grown as tubelings (young seedling trees that are six to ten inches tall).  Due to their young and healthy root systems, tree and shrub tubelings can have a significantly higher survival rate than bareroot plants. This durable nature makes tubelings very easy to transport and plant.

Certain species of native trees and shrubs are available as live stakes, fascines, or brush layers. Typically used to stabilize stream banks or restore natural shorelines, these materials are used along with a variety of bioengineering techniques.

Whether you are looking for mature trees to fill out your landscaping project or you need a large quantity of one particular plant, we offer contracting growing to our business clients throughout the year.

Hardgoods

Consider American Native Plants your one-stop shop for all of your native plant restoration, reforestation, wetland, and landscaping needs. Not only do we offer a variety of native trees and shrubs, but we provide high-quality hardgoods as well.

Environmentally Protective Signage

Your restoration or landscaping project may need environmental protective signage to help protect sensitive or newly planted areas. We offer a variety of signage options such as plastic screen printed signs, aluminum materials, and even custom designs.

Tree Shelters

While all of our native plants are high-quality and ready to grow at your planting site, some may require extra protection to thrive. Our mesh tree shelters are photodegradable and come separately or as a kit complete with wood stake and cable ties for support. These low-maintenance shelters provide protection to your trees, shrubs, and other vulnerable plants.

Mulch Discs

Mulch discs are a cost-effective way to protect your new native trees, shrubs, and other plants. Constructed from durable coconut fibers, mulch discs fit easily around the base of your native plant. They allow water, air, and necessary nutrients to feed your plants while restricting the growth of weeds and conserving moisture.

Contract Growing

Are you looking for custom contract growing to meet a specific deadline or native plant need? At American Native Plants, we’re happy to provide our wholesale customers with custom contract growing services. We can work with you to determine a cost-effective native solution.

The Benefits of Contract Growing

American Native Plants can ensure that you receive a high-quality plant product that meets all of your specifications, budgetary constraints, and deadlines with our contract growing services. Contract growing is especially important when you need specific quantities and sizes of plants for your landscape or restoration project. Contract customers are given access to a significantly larger catalog of plant material than our wholesale clients.

The Catalog

If you’re interested in seeing what American Native Plants has to offer, take a look at our online catalog! We offer a complete list of native trees, native shrubs, herbaceous native plants, and hardgoods! Simply request a quote and one of our staff members will get back to you within 24 hours.

Our Shipping Process

While American Native Plants primarily serves the East Coast, we’re proud to offer shipping of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants throughout the continental United States. Keep in mind that our plants are native to this area of the country, so trees and shrubs that thrive here may not survive in hot, arid climates of the West.

You or your agent may pick up your plants on an appointment basis, or smaller orders may ship by FedEx, UPS, or common carrier. Orders over 70 pounds can often be palletized and shipped with one of our preferred common carriers. Larger orders can be shipped directly to your facility or job site.

If you are interested in placing an order, visit our Quote Cart to receive an estimate and take a look at what’s in stock. We try to respond to all quote requests within 24 hours or less.

Since American Native Plants is a wholesaler to the landscaping community, homeowners or other retail customers must visit our retail site at www.americannativeplantsretail.com. All retail sales are shipped directly to the customer.
