Dig a Hole

Before you dig, measure the “root ball” of the tree. The root ball is the mass of soil and roots that comes out of the container or sack, and its size indicates the depth and length of the hole. Dig the hole two to three times as wide as the root ball.

Massage the Roots

Place the tree on its side and work your hards through the root ball to loosen the roots. Massaging the roots ensures that they are facing south at the time of planting. Once your tree is ready to go into the ground, place the tree into the hole. Hold the tree upright and fill it with soil, tamping down to eliminate air pockets.

Create a Soil Berm

It’s important for the root ball to maintain moisture during the tree’s initial growth stages. By building a soil berm, you can ensure that the tree has enough water to thrive. Use your hands, or a shovel, or build a small mound that encircles the tree, about ten inches from the trunk. The water inside of the mound should contain about ten gallons of water.

Stake and Tie

Some trees require a stake and tie to assist with growth. Stakes also protect from lawnmowers in public areas such as parks or commercial landscapes. If necessary, insert a lodge pole into the ground, about a foot away from the tree. Place a tie at the lowest point of the trunk and nail the ends of the tie together into the wooden stake.

Water and Mulch

Last but certainly not least, water the tree thoroughly. Fill the soil berm with water and revisit the tree for watering once a week. Cover the soil two to three feet around the base with mulch or use a mulch ring to provide the tree with ample protection.
