Learn how to prepare your lawn for the changing seasons with the following tips!

August is one of the most important times for lawn care because the actions you take now will ensure the health of your grass throughout the fall and early winter. The July rainfall has brought our lawns back to life, but it’s up to you to make sure it’s strong enough to survive once the temperature drops. Learn how to prepare your lawn for the changing seasons with the following tips!

Seed

It’s possible that your lawn suffered damage due to the high heat of the early summer, but seeding or sodding will help to repair the areas. Once you lay down the seed, ensure that the area is damp to help germinate the seeds quickly and allow the new grass to emerge. Water the new grass frequently until it starts to grow uniformly on its own.

Fertilize

Plan to apply fertilizer the week before or after Labor Day. One pound of nitrogen helps to provide the plant with the support it needs to sustain growth throughout the fall months. Consider taking a soil test to determine if you need to apply other nutrients.

Water

Watering your lawn is most crucial during the summertime, so your watering schedule will start to decrease as the temperature starts to decrease. Water your lawn periodically during late summer and fall to sustain growth. Regular watering allows your plants to store food to help them survive winter.

Mow

Cutting your grass too short will cut the plants off from important nutrients. During the late summer and early fall, maintain your mowing height between two and three inches. Maintaining the proper blade height allows for leaf tissue to be involved in the making of sustenance for grass plant, which in turn provides a stronger root system for your lawn to feed on all winter long.
